Counseling theory and practice is a course designed to provide an overview of the basic theoretical components of guidance, counseling, and psychotherapy, as well as to foster increased of understanding of the interactions between client and counselor/psychotherapist, and between individual internal mental activities and external environment.

Course objectives: This is an introductory course and so will cover a broad range of material. With this in mind, the objectives are to provide students with: 1. Understanding the definition of guidance, counseling and psychotherapy, and the differentiation between these branches. 2. Understanding individual nature in aspects of physical, mental and social/cultural status and how the interactions among these aspects generate problems. 3. Understanding psychological mechanism of mental health and the interactions among biological, psychological, social and cultural factors. 4. Understanding basic concepts and applications of psychological diagnosis/assessment/evaluation. 5. Understanding different ways of enhancing individual mental health through guidance, counseling and psychotherapy. 6. Understanding how to develop individual style of integrating various approaches of counseling and psychotherapy to create a personal and eclectic style. 7. Understanding the processes and outcomes of counseling and psychotherapy 8. The second half of the class will be practice- and activity- oriented. In brief, the course will combine the use of lectures, discussion, and experiential activities. Course Requirements: 1. Actively participate in class discussion, activities, and demonstrations. 2. Read the selected assignments in their entirety, coming to class prepared to discuss the readings as outlined on the schedule. 3. Read related news/messages of counseling, guidance and psychotherapy, and share them with members in classes. 4. Complete several role plays, two reaction papers, a simulation of counseling session and its sharing, a final exam and an individual project. Turn in papers and project on time. 5. The format of the reaction paper includes (1) contents, (2) analyses and discussions of a case or an issue related to counseling, guidance, and psychotherapy. The format of the individual project will contain (1) a statement of individual personality traits and behavioral styles, (2) a statement of one or several counseling theories and techniques, and (3) an integration to formulate a personal guidance/counseling (eclectic) style, and related analyses/discussions. The sharing of the simulation of counseling session will reveal (1) a brief introduction of its contents and (2) analyses and discussions of this counseling session (process and outcome). 6. Role plays will be implemented in the second phase of the classes. 7. The format of final exam will be discussed in the class. 8. No mobile phones or 3C electronics could be used in classes.
