This course is similar to the idea of "Teaching English without Teaching English" (TED talk by Dr.Roberto Guzman) with emphasis on critical thinking as well as hands on language development skills. This course will focus on: 1.Enhancing students' speaking competence and confidence through intensive communicative activities. 2.Enabling students to use English for job hunting, public presentation and multi- role play through the modified international Toastmaster program. 3.Broaden students' horizons and establish students'critical thinking through international news. The course is divided into three parts: Part I.: (General conversation class):International news report, followed by video clips for a variety of interactive activities, including group discussion, public debate,and panel discussion to broaden students' horizons. Part II: (Public Presentation and leadership development): through the Modified International Toastmaster Program Part III: (Authentic language use): Innovative Product Marketing /Job Hunting/ (prepare students for a real-life competition ) Since language is learned through interactions, students are highly expected to engage in a variety of communicative activities to enhance speaking confidence as well as competence. Week 6: Color blind or color brave. (handout for discussion) Week 7: Married vs single/ with or without children (handout for discussion) Week 8: Midterm exam. Week 9: Introduction of Modified International Toastmaster Program (assign roles) Week 10-12 (Run MITP three times) Week 13: What money can't buy? (Debate class in China) Week 14: Introduce Job Hunting (Pick out two hosts/hostess) Week 15: Job Hunting, Who is the final winner? Week 16: Final exam.
