This course is designed for students of intermediate English proficiency who have no many writing experiences in the real world, and aims to develop their written communication skills for workplace purpose. Students who wish to take this course do not need to have any business background, but will expect to be engaged in completing short writing exercises, applying useful phrases to produce proper languages for specific purposes, and collaboratively writing to communicate their ‘business’ in role playing.

Students who wish to take this course do not need to have any business background, but will expect to be engaged in completing short writing exercises, applying useful phrases to produce proper languages for specific purposes, and collaboratively writing to get their business done. By the end of the course students are expected to: (1) read emails and letters, grasp main points, and respond to the other person; (2) write emails and letters to communicate relevant information for various business occasions and needs, following a conventionalized or standard format (3) produce neat business email messages or letters to convey clear and coherent meaning in a structured manner. (*本課程以英文撰寫電子郵件,可實際應用至校園和職場溝通需求,非以國際貿易為目的亦不需商學背景。) Prerequisites Students who wish to take this course should: 1. complete the courses of Intermediate English I and II, or Elementary English I and II 2. be able to write a paragraph of at least 120 words about things and people using simple language, e.g. descriptions of friends, what happened during the day 3. be reasonably proficient in most of these language areas: adverbial phrases of time, place, and frequency including word order; prepositional phrases (time & place); prepositions of time (on/at/in); modals; future time; past simple; present perfect; simple passive; connecting words Core Capabilities (英文核心能力指標) 英語溝通與表達能力 35% 深度分析與組織思考能力 20% 英語學習策略與技巧 20% 對英語與多元文化的國際視野 10% 善用英語學習資源,培養獨立學習英語的習慣能力 15% Course Materials Online course package will be provided. (*The teacher reserves the right to make changes for pending tasks.) Course Requirements and Evaluation 1. Attendance & oral participation 10% (*No free points for oral participation!) 2. Writing assignments 25% (*take-home exercises; two email messages) 3. Mid-term exam 20% 4. Final writing 20% 5. Presentation 10% 6. Learning tasks 15% Course Rules 1. Every week this class requires students to preview the lessons and write exercises. Come prepared for the pre-study sessions, and complete the writing exercises before the class. 2. Students should always bring pens, pencils, paper notebooks or loose-leaf paper to keep notes or learning records. To achieve better learning results, students are encouraged to bring laptops and tablets to access to online teaching materials in the classroom, or print them out and bring to the classroom, rather than using cell phones. 3. Oral participation is required in all English classes. Writing courses need students’ active thinking and participation, too. Silent and inactive sit-ins, sleeping, or using cell phones in class will cause your participation credits (10%) not to be granted. 4. Regular attendance is important due to various learning tasks that requires students’ participation. Absence may suffer the result of in-class activities (15%) when you do not ask to make up for them. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. 5. Writing assignment must be submitted on time. Every writing assignment loses 10% per day when the assignment is late (including weekend). Presentations should be made according to the date you sign up, and you cannot make up the presentation if you miss it. If you have any problem with the presentation date, please come to fix the date beforehand. Absence cannot be an excuse of not knowing assignment submission or deadline. Be a responsible adult learner! 6. ***AI-assisted reports and assignments are allowed in limited instances:*** AI can be used to prepare for reports and assignments by brainstorming, but students must show how it helped them reach the result.
